Care for Narcissus

• There is only a few flowers need as much sun as the narcissus flower bloom.  This time it is actually good to place the narcissus near a sunny window.
• Change water daily
• Plant will stay green for quite some time after all the flower blooms.
• Save the rock and pebble for use in future vase arrangement.
• Dispose along with your green waste.  Check www.envhonolulu.org for your green waste pick-up schedule.

Steps for Beautiful Narcissus Blooms:

1.Buy the bulbs from a reputable supplier.
2.Keep it in the dark, cool place until you’re ready to cut it
(Usually I force the bulb about a month of the anticipated bloom)
Remember Chinese New Year is on February 7 this year.
3.Soak the bulbs in water overnight
4.Peel one to two layers of outer skin (browned or dried)
5.Press and feel the bulb and see where the new shoots are
6.Make sure your incision do not cut into those shoots
7.Cut about 4 to 5 layers and leave the bottom half inches untouch
8.Trim the bottom old root a little so new one will come out
9.Soak it in water for the next 2 days and change water 3 times a day
10.Wash the bulb clean of sappy fluid
11.After 2 days, new root will grow and green shoot should be rising out the bulb
12.It’s time set it in a container with water and rock
13.Leave it in the sun until it flower. The more sunlight the better.
(Don’t worry, it won’t dry out as long as there is water in the container.)
14.Change water twice a day.
15. See the green shoot grow and flower bloom for the day to come. It should flower between 28-30 days.
16. Enjoy. Happy New Year.

Care for kadomatsu arrangement

Traditionally, kadomatsu arrangements are displayed from January 1 to January 7 and burned on January 15.  Some people keep their dry bamboo arrangements throught the year.  Here are a few tips on keeping the kadomatsu nice and neat.

Set Kadomatsu in a dish or container filled with water.
Keep water level below the rope.
Keep Kadomatsu in a cool spot and stay away from direct heat when not in use.
Pull foliage as they die.
Bamboo dry nicely and can be level cut to reuse as nail or pen holder. Otherwise, dispose along with your green waste.  Check www.envhonolulu.org for your green waste pick-up schedule.

Turn your Christmas trees into a wreath and TreeCycle the rest

Trim a few branches and make a wreath for the new year. Local Christmas trees last a lot longer than you think. For the rest of your Christmas tree. Please recycle it. Remove all ornaments. Cut the tree in sections of about 3 feet for curb side pick up. Check your green waste collection at envhonolulu.org

“Please be aware that the State has discontinued the special treecycling sites at parks and other locations around the island. Do not bring your trees to these sites. Island residents can choose curbside collection or drop-off. Condo and commercial buildings can arrange to haul trees directly to composting facilities (no charge for Christmas trees), courtesy of the City”
