Cherry Blossoms in Hawaii

Cherry Blossoms

It’s April and cherry blossoms are here. Japanese would set out to sit under cherry trees and watch them bloom while drinking sake. What a life? Tokyo and Kyoto cherry blossoms has already opened. Travel there before first week of April for best viewing. We who lives in Hawaii has to settle with cherry branches with blossoms buds. Still, it is amazing to see cherry flowers bloom from a bare branch.

First cherry blossoms,
a cuckoo, the moon and snow:
another year closes

When was the last supper?

March 21, 0000? Did the last Supper happened on Good Friday? No, on Thursday. Jesus died on Good Friday, and resurrected on Sunday. Check religionfacts.com for other facts about Easter.

How do I pick a good potted Easter Lily?

Live Easter Lily plant

“. . . For the longest possible period of enjoyment in your home, look for plants with flowers in various stages of ripeness. For example, the best selection would be a plant with just one or two open or partly open blooms, and three or more puffy, unopened buds of different sizes. The ripe puffy buds will open up within a few days, while the tighter ones will bloom over the next several days. . . . ” [source: aggie-horticulture]

So, you’ve got the eggs, the baskets, the chocolate, the bunny outfit and we don’t have to remind you about the Easter lily. So where do we get our Easter lily on the Island anyway. Mostly from farms along the Oregon coast. May be someday, someone will try to grow them on the Big Island. (Strangely enough, they are growing roses and stargazer lilies there already.)

Easter celebration is just around the corner. This year is on March 23. Join the giving tradition of Easter lilies this year. We have both potted lilies as well as spring mix arrangement. Call 732-7668 to check on availability.

“. . . . Each holiday is marked by cherished traditions that bring joy, comfort, and warmth, and provide continuity from one generation to the next. Easter has its share of traditions: egg decorations and hunts; gift baskets and chocolate bunnies, sunrise church services, parades, and, of course, the Easter Lily. For many, the beautiful trumpet-shaped white flowers symbolize purity, virtue, innocence, hope and life – the spiritual essence of Easter. . . . The Easter Lily, the traditional time-honored flower of Easter, is highly regarded as a joyful symbol of beauty, hope and life. The large, trumpet-shaped, fragrant white flowers make a meaningful gift that embodies the very essence of the celebration of Easter. . . . ” [source: aggie-horticulture]

Saint Patrick’s Day Flower Arrangment

Saint Patrick’s Arrangement

Celebrate Irish. Celebrate green. Come and share the Saint Patrick’s Day spirit with our supper green rose flower arrangement. I especially like this Irish blessing:

May you always have…
Walls for the winds
A roof for the rain
Tea beside the fire
Laughter to cheer you
Those you love near you
And all your heart might desire.

Together we produce my soul food for the week ahead

handtied bouquet

Food for the body; ideas for the mind; flowers for the soul! Those of us who do not grow our own blossoms too easily go without. Yes, nowadays, like other fresh produce, bouquets can be had at the local food emporium. I prefer to find mine at a regular neighborhood boutique where the purveyor of blooms is a florist. I want to suit my personal taste, satisfied best when I am not faced with one-size-fits-all choices. I have a personal relationship with my talented floral arranger who always knows by what I tell her exactly what on-the-spot production she can fashion for me while I wait. She welcomes my preferences, hears my suggestions and together we produce my soul food for the week ahead. It is nature’s most accessible color palette which, when brought indoors, brightens my waking moments each time my eyes bring those chosen flowers into view. For just pennies per day I provide myself not an extravagance but a life-giving necessity.
